10 PICKS FOR AUCKLAND PRIDE

Updated: Dec 6, 2021

This month from the 3rd to the 28th of February is the Auckland Pride Festival. There are a number of awesome events to get involved with—we’ve picked out a few that have caught our eye but there are so many more happening throughout the month. It’s a fantastic opportunity to collectively celebrate community, identity, and what makes us as individuals so beautifully unique.

With over 10,000 people expected to attend, Big Gay Out is one of the biggest events in Auckland's annual calendar. Come with your friends and whānau to enjoy some incredible community acts, there is also plenty of food, dancing and colour to go around.

Pride March

The Pride March is always so much fun, celebrating the diverse, energetic rainbow community. We love seeing everyone so happy and excited, while also reinforcing the strength of the community, amplifying their voices, and calling for continued progress.

Literary Festival: samesame but different

Starting with a poetry speakeasy in Grey Lynn, samesame but different has various free events championing queer literature. We’re excited for the gala on Friday, bringing together various authors to share stories of what home means to them.

Rainbow Night Market

This Night Market in Britomart celebrates both Pride and the Lunar New Year, and we’re looking forward to eating delicious food whilst checking out the stalls and enjoying the performances!

This interactive work by Atamira spans from 15th–19th of Feb and allows for a behind the scenes view of Māori contemporary dance with open rehearsals, classes, and performances.

Yoga in the Dark

These glow sessions will encourage you to focus inwards and try something you may not have done before. There are four classes happening across Auckland over the course of February so make sure to check which one is closest to you.

Luca Nicholas: Studies 2017–18

An art exhibition at Visions from Feb 11th–Mar 13th, Studies 2017–18 is based on images drawn from Grindr, recreated to accentuate the vulnerability and care needed to build new connections.

Agenda Launch Party

We love the sound of The Agenda, a new zine created by queer law students! Launching on the 18th at Monster Valley, they aim to improve representation and empower the queer/genderqueer community through poems, essays, and more.

Free Movie—Priscilla

An all time classic, what better way to spend a Saturday evening than heading to a movie with a group of friends.

Queer with a K

https://aucklandpride.org.nz/queer-with-a-k/

This event celebrates the history of K Road and the people who have called it their home. There will be various video interviews, a live panel discussion, and the rest of K Road will be open late with various food and drink deals!

Check out aucklandpride.org.nz for a full rundown of events throughout the month. Karanga Atu, Karanga Mai: Auckland Pride 2021 is a call to action, celebrating the strong, diverse members of the rainbow community, the progress already achieved, and looking forward to continued change and community. Hopefully we’ll see you there! xx
